My internet security package is due to expire, what do other users think is the best value/safest brand around. At the moment I have Trend PC Cillin security which came with the Dell PC three years ago and has been renewed annually for around £35.00. I am the sole user.

I've been using Bit Defender for a couple of years - before that McAfee. I buy mine from Ebay. I get a 3 licence package which this time around cost less than £20, so whatever you decide to use, you can probably get it cheaper on Ebay.

I believe this is where i can be of use...

Never pay for Anti-virus security.

There are lots of free ones which are just as good and in my opinon better. Go to download.com type in anti virus and have your pick of the bunch. I rate Avast, I've nver had a problem.

The major difference between free and pay for software is support. By all means pay up front for calls to India, oh and you also get charged for the calls.

After that you should also think about malware protection, different from anit-v software in a confusing way. This is better for removing viruses and anti-v for stopping them. There is a microsoft free one which is the only one currently stopping an email trojan causing lots of trouble.

Ditto Kal-El.

Used free software for years, never had a problem.

Well I eventually chose Kaspersky Internet Security 2010, cost £18.99.

I'll be interested to hear what you think of it. My sister recently got that for her laptop and she's been having a few problems since she installed it. Not sure whether it's Kaspersky or the laptop itself to blame.

I used to use Kaspersky but was recommended to use Mcafee by a computer repair man. Not had any trouble with either.

I used McAfee prior to Bit Defender. No real probs with it - just that Bit Defender is cheaper now. Smile

Kaspersky Int Sec works well enough, though it does do a great number of updates, sometimes as often as four or five a day, which can sometimes noticeably slow your machine. It will also place innocent programs under unnecessary restrictions and often needs to be advised that you trust them, by you manually replacing them into areas of lower restriction than it will deem warranted. I have been surprised by some of its decisions, but it learns fast and I have quite liked it.

I suspect this may be at the root of the problems my sister is experiencing with it. She will have to look into the settings and teach it what is safe etc. She's a bit of a novice with all this though and as she doesn't live locally, it's not easy trying to advise her over the phone.
