| This thread is about transport in Hull and East Yorkshire. First thing is a reminder that sunday is the East Coast Run from East Park to Bridlington(limekiln car park)There will be old buses, cars and motorbikes in East Park to see before they leave at about 11 on their run to Brid, where they can be seen again in that car park. Trolleybuses.I used to live at the terminus of th 63 and used to catch one into town. They ran every 3 minutes and had far better acceleration than petrol buses. | |

| Trolleybuses I remember very well. I can never see why they were abandoned in favour of diesel buses. The trolleybus was pollution-free and very quiet and, short of a power outage throughout the system, practically unstoppable. Mind you they were a bit too silent sometimes and many a time I have been almost run over when I was a nipper because I was not paying attention when I was larking (another good Hull expression[different thread])about with my mates. | |

| I think they were abandoned beacuse Hull grew beyond the termanii.63 stopped at Endke Lane, but HNE grew beyond that.Same with the 64 that stopped at Ings Road, and Longhill and Bilton Grange grew beyond that/Gypsiville grew beyond the 71.New deisel busses could extend the routes into all the new estates. | |

| I never thought of that explanation, barrow. I suppose it was cheaper to go over to motor buses than to extend the overhead electrics into the new estates. I still think it is a shame that they didn't run two systems side by side but I suppose there were impracticabilities inherent in that sort of plan. | |

| Bradford also had trolleybuses and we were lucky enough to be on a trolley route. They were far superior to the diesel buses. We tended to look down on the poor souls who were relegated to the noisy, bumpy, smelly diesels. The wiring could surely have been extended wherever necessary in Hull. I actually come from Thornton, (birthplace of the Brontes, by the way!) which is right on the city boundary at the Keighley/Halifax side, about four or five miles from the city centre. It's uphill all the way, as you are climbing into the Pennines at that point. The trolleys managed it effortlessly. | |

| As they did in Huddersfield running up may steep hills. A pity that no Hull trolley buses were preserved in Hulls transport museum/The British Trolleybus Society wanted to buy a Coronaton trolley bus,but Hull City Council said no.They were all scrapped. Good book on Hull trolleybuses is published by Middleton Press. There are also some DVD available. But where did the 66 go to? | |

| Barrow, does it work, when reading the above out loud and listening to the sounds of the words?
Come then, look within and way back, using a fond mind's eye, gently coached by words chosen from our excellent friend Colombo,
"A 9400 Class 0-6-0 Pannier tank 9407 shunting wagons" (not from the coaling plant at Didcot’s shed but along Princes-Dock-Side). "A tapered boiler shunting class, designed by the last C.M.E. of the Great Western, F.W. Hawksworth, and introduced in 1947. They were still being built some years after nationisation." Ah the man knew his Locomotives! The sound and smell of heavy work from man and machine was slap bang-bang-bang-bang in the midst of this great city's centre. Her big heart beating with good hard and honest work.

| I saved all my stuff from thisisyourmail, I intend to open a website with virtual history tours of Hull. If you have Colombo's material, why don't you add it on to a photo hosting site such as flickr, webtimes, or something similar and post a link or thread on here. | |

| Mike, I do not own these photos. They are someone else's property. I am wary of contacting a grieving widow without a proper introduction. Also some of the photos were offered by Colombo and were then included in a published book, "The Day of the Holiday Express’ by Richard Woodley, and published by Ian Allen". I have to respect copyright and there will be a tangle, I warrant, if I am not careful. Please advise! | |

I think you're okay as far as copyright is concerned if you don't gain financially and acknowledge the photographer. I used one of Colombo's pics on another railway board but got his permission to do so first. Of course, being the all round good bloke that he was he gave permission without hesitation.

| I still have the contact details of Michael Lake, and will try to contact the family this week. I had the pleasure of meeting both him and his lovely wife at Carnegie Heritage Centre shortly before his death. They were both really nice and his passing was a great loss, but I know back then he was interested in saving the collection and doing something worthwhile with it. | |

| in the sky today over Hessle, there were four vapour trails. All were U shaped. It would seem as four different planes came from the west, did a U turn, and went back west again! Anyone know why? and don't say that as many folks in Hull smoke, there was an "ash" cloud over Hull! | |

| I well remember British Railways having some strange articulated three-wheelers carrying goods around the back of Paragon Station and they were amazing little machines which could pull enormous loads around with ease. | |
