I think most people who have used 'the key' will have suffered the pain of drawing blood with deep cuts to the thumb and fingers as you wrestle the lid off a tin of corned beef or sardines. Pain can be relieved by running your injured digits down the ice-cold moisture on the glass of a pint of chilled lager. The 'key' as been in use for decades and you would think someone would have invented an easier way to open the tin. I wish they would hurry up because I'm sick of getting olive oil all over my best Chino's

With opening corned beef tins, I picked up a useful tip from an old cook I knew. He used to use an old fashioned "Bull's head" type tin opener and open both ends and just push out the meat from the wide end. I have tried it with a butterfly tin opener and if you are careful it does work. As for cutting the delicate pinkies, use a tea towel or oven glove to protect them. As for opening ordinary cans these electric one handed types are brilliant, cos they remove the complete end of the can and there are never any jagged ends. Grating cheese? What is wrong with using a food processor for that job? You see, Steve, dead easy. "Simples" Laughing

Well after the loss of four fingers and turning the cheese into what looked like a cheese dip with the food processor,i decided to use my brain processor Idea and realised that it is sold ready grated, now all we need is a solution to the corn beef tin,and getting blood stains out of chinos, perhaps putting corn beef and the like in round tins, then we are back to a decent "cheap"tin opener Exclamation

ROUND TINS FOR CORNED BEEF!!! Evil or Very Mad Whatever next? Square tins were good enough when I was a lad and I see no reason to change all that just because some people object to home amputation of a couple of fingers. Of course, wimps could always buy their corned beef ready sliced from the butchers and (crimes against humanity this) their cheese grated at the supermarket, I suppose. I suppose you haven't realised how many manufacturers of square tins and cheese grating devices would have to lay off workers impinging further on our rather delicate fiscal situation. Next there will be a lobby for selling new potatoes in cans, cooked meats in plastic packaging and drink in plastic bottles. The world is going to the dogs aqnd to hell in a handbasket (whatever a handbasket is). Have we learned nothing from the Romans and Greeks who made life easier for their repective lower orders and lost their empires. Bah! No No No

Steve, we have too many fingers anyway. All we really need is two to wave at politicians and people who try to change from the old things like square corned beef tins and ungrated cheese. Laughing

Another one that causes a lot of problems is the vacuum sealed jam jars.Strong wrists are needed to twist the lid off are a near impossible task for many people. No one ,or inventors have come to grips with this one. Inventors normally come up with a solution that makes them a fortune. Some of their inventions have failed miserably, such as:-Inflatable dart boards ,Waterproof tea bags and the helicopter ejector seat
