I also saw the BBC interview between Catherine Heseltine and the Imam. Very interestingly he said that covering the face entirely was 'non-Koranic' and pre-dated the Koran, being a tribal traditional custom from places such as Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia. He said this should be completely separated from religious beliefs and that nothing in the Koran demanded covering the face. He was quite vehement about what he termed a tribal custom. He also felt that covering your face could not aid with social cohesion. So there you are. Views from a respected Muslim cleric.
