David Cameron and the minister for housing are proposing to bring in a scheme whereby new council tenants will be given only short term leases, either 5 or 10 years.
According to the housing minister this is because some people are taking up housing stock when they are in a much healthier economic situation and could afford to move on, or it is encouraging people to stay on the benefits lifestyle they have become used to. The minister reckons that if these people only had a 5 year lease it would encourage them to find a job and better themselves.
I wonder just how many housing estates these people ever visit and do they not realise that the majority of council tenants work in low paid jobs but still pay their rent on time every week and keep their houses like little palaces. Surely a short term lease would discourage anyone from bettering the area knowing full well they are going to be thrown out after a while.

Ha! Surprised? The result will be the same as seen in the majority of Forces accommodation. Anyone who has had the "pleasure" of being billeted for short periods of a just a few years at a time in the likes of Aldershot will instantly know what I and Tiger mean and what to expect. Tenants, without prospect of any stable tenure do not make "little palaces" many leave an absolute tip when moving on. There are, of course, exceptions, but that is what they are, exceptions!

Another sinister move by Politicians!.We have many single AOP's occupying rented 2or 3 bedroomed House. Will they be forced to move to smaller accomodation when their 'lease' expires?. Many are reluctant to leave a house full of family memories and will remain until death beckons. On the positive side would decent sociable families be allowed to stay and extend their leases whereas undesirables would not?
